Officer Dude

Perhaps you have heard of the story illustrated here:

It details the behavior of "Officer" Rivieri, who physicially assaulted a child that he thought had been disrepectful towards him and called him "dude." Police have the authority to enforce the laws that have been enacted by elected officials. As there is no law that prohibits referring to the officer as “dude,” he has no authority to demand to be called “Officer Whatever” or anything else. When he touched the child he committed the misdemeanor offense of assault. When he shoved him to the ground he committed the felony of battery. At that point he was no longer acting in the capacity of law officer but rather as a criminal. Respect for an individual that exceeds that which is granted by law must be earned, and is not instilled upon the donning of a uniform that so many others have worn with honor. I have tremendous respect for officers that risk their lives in protecting society. But the ones that think they are somehow above the laws they are sworn to enforce, and feel that somehow they are entitled to act as this goon did, need to be identified and eliminated. This guy should fired immediately, charged criminally, and sued civilly.
